Maarten’s passion for trees started at a young age. At 14, he planted his first trees and learned the trade at a local nursery. While Maarten’s father was a clover farmer, Maarten chose his own path. In 2004, seven years later, he founded Boomkwekerij Maarten van Overbeek together with his wife, Laura. Under their joint leadership and shared passion for trees and entrepreneurship, the company has grown to 65 hectares and a team of 12 permanent employees.
Our focus is on growing high-quality trees to create a greener future for everyone.
Our nursery spans 65 hectares of loam-containing sandy soils. Of this, 50 hectares are planted with trees, while the remaining 15 hectares are used to grow green manure and other crops to optimize soil quality.
By working the soil with cover crops and natural green manures that enrich the soil, we encourage the buildup of organic matter and biodiversity. This approach results in fertile soil that is perfectly suited for long-term tree cultivation. The loam-containing sandy soil promotes well-branched roots, leading to excellent root ball formation.
To maintain optimal soil quality, we use controlled drainage systems on nearly all our fields. Drainage pipes are installed every six meters in the ground.
This system enables us to precisely regulate the water level in the soil, which is essential for maintaining soil structure stability and preventing both drought and waterlogging. By optimizing water management in this way, we create a healthy growing environment for our trees.
A major advantage of this system compared to sprinkler irrigation is that it allows us to maintain water levels and retain more rainwater in the ground. This enables the trees to always absorb moisture through capillary action, even during dry periods.
Controlled drainage also keeps the topsoil loose and dry, so we can still hoe effectively.
Another advantage of the system is that we can plant early in the spring. After winter, we release some water from the soil. Once planting is done, we raise the water level again. Controlled drainage allows us to use water efficiently for our trees.
All in all, this system improves the quality of our trees and the reliability of our deliveries, meaning you can count on consistent supply, regardless of the weather.

We believe in innovative techniques. At our nursery, we use the AIGRO UP, a robot that autonomously maintains the grass paths between our trees based on GPS. We are also hoeing for the paths between our multi-stemmed trees. Keeping these paths well-maintained contributes to the well-being of our young trees and, of course, the nursery’s appearance.
In line with our sustainable vision, we control weeds mechanically rather than using chemicals. By employing mechanical techniques, we can effectively remove weeds without burdening the soil with harmful substances. This not only benefits soil health but also helps preserve the environment and ensures the safety of our people.
By tying our trees mechanically, we can deliver them very compactly. This allows more trees to fit on a truck, contributing to more sustainable transportation. Additionally, the process is significantly faster and much better for the ergonomics of our employees. A true win-win-win situation!
At the beginning of the growing season, we prune our trees with a remote-controlled pruning machine on tracks. With a maximum pruning height of 10 meters, this machine takes a lot of work off our hands. After mechanical pruning, the trees are carefully inspected and, if necessary, manually touched up. This way, we combine efficiency with the highest quality standards.
Our tractors are equipped with GPS technology and can operate autonomously. This allows us to plant our young trees with great precision. An added benefit is that we can also perform other tasks, such as hoeing and mowing, with GPS support. This promotes the quality and uniformity of our tree batches.
In addition to our team, we have more valuable helpers at our nursery: insects! By placing insect hotels and sowing flower meadows, we attract beneficial insects. Ladybugs assist with natural pest control, bees and butterflies are important pollinators, and smaller insects play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

During the harvest season, Rens is the contact person for our sales. From October to April, there’s a good chance you’ll speak with him when you contact us. In the summer months, Rens focuses on his own nursery.
